Time for a Run to My Local Grocery Store
Who loves beet juice and nursery rhymes? So, I have a confession, I love to go grocery shopping. It has nothing to do with the array of fresh vegetables and endless supply of olive oil. No! It’s the people, the employees. Yes, no need to rewind, you heard it right, it’s the people, the employees! Of course, I always need a fresh supply of organic chicken and romaine lettuce but there is something about the people who make this store come alive. It echoes of stories, memories in motion. Many days I do feel rushed for time, but it’s because of my own time-management issues. That’s a story for another day!
Beet Juice On Register One
Even in my hot flush of a rush when I reach the checkout line it all seems to pause. Am I the only one who fills their cart to overflowing while the person behind me is staring me down with laser eyes while holding their one bottle of beet juice? Moving on, it’s my time, they called my number and I begin to fill the conveyor belt with loads of fresh veggies, chicken stock, organic taffy and maybe even some chocolate covered pretzels, organic of course. No judgements here please!
Hello Rachel
There she is, with her messy bun hair and cozy scarf wrapped around her neck because her register is right in front of the entrance where a constant Wichita breeze is always sure to dance around her. Hello Rachel? How is your day going? Oh, you know… Instead of being distracted by the beaty eyes with the bottle of beet juice staring me down, wishing I would scurry along. I chose to capture the moment. Click: It was nothing earth shattering, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Nursery Rhymes
During the checkout process we stumbled upon the topic of nursery rhymes. We laughed at some of the silly themes and downright disturbing ones too. It’s interesting that we would sing “Ring Around the Rosies”, or “Humpty Dumpty” to name a few, to our babies or children because they carry such a negative message. This is my subjective opinion, of course. Then, she proceeded to tell me about the history of these songs and why they were written. History, what a beautiful topic and reminder of how people retold their life experiences, whether good or bad through poems, songs and stories. Truly, the arts are an outlet to share our voice. Indeed, this five-minute conversation, maybe the person with the bottle of beet juice would disagree, was a moment captured.
Thank you, Rachel, for Showing up Today.
Did Rachel even know how her mind was working so beautifully. She was spewing out historical facts faster than the computer was calculating the cost of my groceries. Does she know how smart she is. She could be the next author of a famous book or a teacher of History, an influencer of student education or merely just bringing laughter into an ordinary moment in time. Does she know that she filled this mama’s cup with a much-needed espresso shot of joy? It is said that laughter is great medicine. Well today I received a great dose of healing. Thank you, Rachel, for showing up today. Faithfulness is an underrated character quality that is desperately needed. You, showing up today matters!
