Overcome the fall by rising, what does that even mean? Overcome is a loaded word. Sweep, win, surpass your expectations, prevail and finish strong. These are motivating but challenging words. We all want to grab these words and parade a banner of victory over our lives. However, we forget to add the variable of falling in our equation.
You + Fall = Overcome
All Skate Please
My son and I attended a Homeschool skating event. I have been skating since I was a little girl. Skating is one of my favorite workouts. Yes, I do consider skating a form of exercise. The music, the glossy floor and retro skates always bring a delight to my five senses. My son who is a skate boarder, has never tried skating on roller skates. Honestly, he was not as excited as his mama but when he entered the building everything changed. He noticed the large skating area and that he would have the opportunity to meet other boys his age. It was a win!
People Watching
It’s always fun to watch people skating. Everyone is on a different level, but we are all having fun. You have amazing employees who can skate fast, backwards and even spin all while keeping an eye on any accidents that they may need to assist with. Then, there are the regulars who flow like an ice-skater to the music. With ease they skate forward, then backwards, speed up and maybe slow down to a leisurely skate. Next, you have the littles who seem like they came out of the womb skating. Let’s not forget, all the beginners who are holding tightly to the wall as they are learning the feeling and balance of skating on shoes with wheels. I love their determination. They are not giving up.
The Beautiful Fall
It’s normal to see people fall. Even as a seasoned skater I too have fallen. However, this one girl caught my eye. During our two-hour skating session, I noticed along with everyone else that she fell more than a few times. After about twenty falls on the hard floor, I lost count. Nevertheless, what stood out to me was her reaction. Each time she hit the floor she never cried, got mad or gave up. She simply got back up on her skates and kept skating.

Her Reaction to the Fall
What impressed me the most was her reaction to falling. She could have folded to defeat. Maybe even hand over her skates to failure. However, she never gave attention to her fall. Indeed, she only set her eyes on the rising. Nothing was going to keep her from the victory and satisfaction of skating, especially not falling. Her rising outshined her falling every time.
What Can We Learn from This Story?
- Everyone falls, at least everyone who tries.
- To win you must have fallen at some point.
- You have a choice. Focus on the FALL or focus on the RISING.

Overcome the Fall by Rising: Examples of People in the Bible Who Did Just That.
David
In 1 Samuel 17 the story of David and Goliath unfolds. David is young, small and the least likely to slay a giant who has been terrifying God’s people. However, David did not focus his eyes on his limitations. Indeed, he did not fold in the face of fear. Truly, he set his gaze upon God, his defender. He was confident of the victory because he had seen God’s faithfulness throughout his life. He knew his rising would come in trusting God as he ran bravely towards his opposition.
Samson
Samson was truly the strongest man to ever live. He was given supernatural strength by God. However, this gift came with trust and obedience to God. Unfortunately, Samson made many poor decisions along the way that cost him relationships, battles and even his eyes. Nevertheless, he did not focus on his falls or failures. Even, during his last breath he chose to rise by praying to God and asking Him for strength to destroy the Philistines. In the end, his rise led to victory. Judges 16.
